MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College swept a nonconference softball doubleheader from Kenyon College Sunday (Mar. 29) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 8-6, and took game two, 9-1 in five innings. Marietta improves to 12-8 overall, while Kenton falls to 11-13 on the season.
Marietta took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning of game one.
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) smacked an RBI double and then
Lauren Musgrove (Dillsboro, Ind./South Dearborn) launched a two-run home run way over the left field fence.
Kenyon tied the game with runs in the fifth and sixth innings. A solo home run from Leah Huban tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the sixth.
The Pioneers answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Kenzi Denzer (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) and
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) each drove in a run.
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) plated two more runs with a single to right. Marietta's final run scored on a passed ball.
Kuban cut the Pioneer lead to 8-6 with a three-run home run to right field in the top of the seventh. Marietta went to the bullpen and brought in
Emma Cozza (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) to pitch. Cozza got a ground out and a pop up to secure the win.
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) (5-4) got the win in relief. She worked 1.1 innings and allowed four runs on three hits with three walks. Cozza picked up her second save working the final two-thirds of an inning.
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) started and allowed two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings.
Allison McCutchen (0-4) took the loss. She gave up two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of relief. Jillian Messinger started and worked 3.1 innings giving up three runs on four hits.
White, Musgrove and Denzer each had two hits in the game for Marietta.
Hancock delivered the walk-off win in game two. Johnson led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Hancock grounded out to the third baseman allowing Johnson to score the winning run.
The Pioneers got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single from
Allie Sheen (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel). Johnson worked a bases-loaded walk in the second inning and then
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) plated a run with a sac fly for a 3-0 Marietta lead.
Kenyon pushed a run across in the third and then Marietta put five runs on the board in the home half of the third. Denzer and Johnson each delivered RBI singles, while
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) drove in two with a single up the middle. Sheen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded making it 8-1.
Kylie Cobb (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) (3-1) started and got the win. She allowed one run on five hits in 3.0 innings. Hancock pitched 2.0 innings and struck out three.
Becca Boue (1-1) started and took the loss. She gave up five runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings. Kylie Hamm and McCutchen also pitched for the Owls.
Johnson, Sheen, Elliott, and
Mallory Gorgacz (Edinburg, Pa./Union Area) each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
Marietta plays a nonconference doubleheader at Denison University on Tuesday (Mar. 31) at 3:00 p.m.
