Etta Express splits OAC doubleheader at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio — Marietta College split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ohio Northern University Sunday (Mar. 29) afternoon at Wander Field. Marietta won game one, 12-1, and the Polar Bears earned the split with an 8-5 win in game two.

Marietta is now 5-12 on the season and 3-1 in the OAC. Ohio Northern moves to 13-7 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.

Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) drove in Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) with a single to center field in the top of the second inning. Thomson Babineau (Scituate, Mass./Calvary Chapel) made it 2-0 with a sac fly later in the frame. A three-run home run from Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) in the fourth extended the Pioneer lead to 5-0.

After Ohio Northern scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, Marietta put three more on the board in the sixth. Bradley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Ferncreek) knocked in two runs with a double to center field. Jones later scored on a first and third double steal for an 8-1 lead.

Marietta plated four insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Babineau worked a bases-loaded walk. Jones plated two more with another double. Babineau scored later in the inning on an error.

Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) (3-3) started and got the win. He allowed one run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work. Ziance walked two and struck out five. Alex Dues (Fort Recovery, Ohio/Fort Recovery) pitched the final 2.0 innings and gave up a pair of hits.

Aslyn Farinelli (2-1) started and got the loss. He was charged with seven runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work. Five other Polar Bears pitched in the game.

Jones finished 3-for-6 with two doubles and four runs batted in. Jameson Embrescia (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) also had three hits in the game, while Ciavollela had two hits and three RBI.

In game two, Ohio Northern scored six runs in the first three innings. Sammy Roush and Chase Armstrong got things rolling with solo home runs.

Embrescia got the Pioneers on the board with an RBI single in the fifth. Babineau drove in a run with a single in the seventh. Ciavolella plated a second run in the seventh with a sac fly cutting the Polar Bear lead to 7-3.

Marietta tried to rally with two more runs in the eighth to get within two runs, 7-5. Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) had an RBI single and Embrescia a sac fly.

After the Polar Bears added another solo home run in the eighth from Kyler Lapp, ONU retired Marietta in order in the ninth tom preserve the win.

Luke Czarnomski (Medina, Ohio/Medina) (1-1) started and got the loss. He allowed three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Gavin Hyde (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman), Josh Pedersen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson), Reece Rupert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland), and Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) all pitched in relief.

Drew Tolfree (3-0) started and got the win. Tolfree allowed one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Brayden Windnagel picked up his first save of the season working the final 1.1 innings.

DeCello was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.

Marietta hosts Heidelberg University on Friday (April 3) for a 1:00 p.m. OAC doubleheader.
