MARIETTA, Ohio — Carnegie Mellon University swept a nonconference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Sunday (Mar. 22) afternoon. The Tartans won game one, 16-6 in five innings, and then took game two, 15-5 in five innings.
Marietta moves to 9-7 on the season. Carnegie Mellon improves to 12-6 overall. Marietta is off until next Saturday (Mar. 28) when they travel to Ohio Northern University for a 1:00 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Carnegie Mellon scored in every inning of game one. The Tartans used a four-run and a six-run fourth inning to pull away from the Pioneers. After Marietta plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth, CMU responded with three in the top of the fifth.
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) got the Pioneers on the board with a two-run single in the first inning.
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) delivered an RBI double in the second to get Marietta within two, 5-3. MC's final three runs came in the fourth on a two-run double from
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) and another RBI single from Streets.
Emma Cozza (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) (3-1) started in the circle for the Pioneers and took the loss. She allowed three runs on four hits in 1.0 inning of work.
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local),
Kylie Cobb (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda), and
Violet Ellerbrock (Clinton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) all pitched for Marietta.
Gianna Adams (7-2) got the win working 4.0 innings and giving up six runs on 10 hits. Gabriella Triano retired all three batters she faced in the fifth inning.
White went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Johnson had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
Kenzi Denzer (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the second inning of game two, Carnegie Mellon plated six runs in the second and four more in the third. They finished off the run-rule victory with three more runs in the top of the fifth.
Marietta grabbed the early lead with four runs in the first.
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) got things rolling with an RBI double to right. Streets followed with a runs scoring ground out. Johnson finished off the rally with a towering two-run home run to centerfield. The Pioneers' final run came on an error in the fourth.
Triano (2-1) got the win in relief for the Tartans. She worked 2.0 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits. Haley Pucci started an allowed four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings. Kiera Thomas worked a scoreless fifth inning.
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) (4-4) took the loss. She was charged with six runs, four earned, on four hits in 1.0 inning. Cozza, Hancock, and Cobb all pitched in the game.
Johnson homered and Heath, Streets, and
Lauren Musgrove (Dillsboro, Ind./South Dearborn) each had a double.
