FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team took to the road during spring break and dropped a matchup with the University of Mary Washington, 19-2, on Wednesday (March 11) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-3 overall and with the win the Eagles improve to 3-4.
"That's was a great team we just played, and it's always great to get to compete against some of the best in the country," said Marietta head coach
Lindsay Reho. "What I am most proud of today is the fight and constant encouragement from each player on and off the field. We have another chance to get back in the win column tomorrow and we are hungry!"
After four minutes of play, UMW lit up the board first as Sadie Laughlin got a shot to go in the net. After that, the Pioneers could not shut down the Eagle attack as UMW scored another seven goals and took a 8-0 going into the second period. The Eagles also controlled the second period, to the tune of five more scores, and took a 13-0 lead into intermission.
The third quarter saw Marietta fall behind further as UMW broke through with another trio of scores. Marllory Wiles finally got Marietta on the scoreboard with an unassisted score at the 7:05 mark, but the Eagles pushed the lead to 17-1 going into fourth quarter.
Molly Dickens (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) got a free position score in the fourth, but the deficit ws too much to overcome. UMW cruised to a 19-2 victory.
Tessa Labrasciano (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior) played the first three quarters in the net, facing 23 shots, 22 of which were on goal. She had five saves in the match.
