MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Chatham University, 14-2, on Wednesday (Feb. 25) evening. With the loss the Pioneers drop to 2-2 overall and the victory evens the Cougars record to 1-1 overall.
"Tonight was a tough loss but an awesome learning experience," said Marietta head coach
Nathan Grover. "Credit to Chatham, they executed from start to finish! We have some things to learn from in this game but will continue to work towards where we want to be as a team."
Chatham controlled the first half with seven goals, four from Thomas Whitaker to take a commanding lead into the half.
After the Cougars added three more tallies in the third quarter, the Pioneers finally got on the board at the 7:48 mark as
Hutch Melind (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) took a pass from
Nathan Hamilton (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) and deposited in the goal. Chatham finished the period with another four scores and led 13-1 going into the fourth period. Hamilton added a quick score in the fourth quarter but the Pioneers could not make up the difference and would fall to the Cougars.
Cal Henthorne (Wooster, Ohio/St. Edward) played all 60 minutes in the net, he faced 38 shots, 25 of which were on goal, and made 11 saves in the game
The Pioneers were led by Hamilton with a goal and an assist and picked up four groundballs. Melind scored the other goal. Dickerson was 7-of-14 in face-offs and also picked up four groundballs.
Bryce Lotspeich (Powhatan, Va./Benedictine College Prep) led with two caused turnovers.
Marietta will return to Don Drumm Stadium this Saturday (Feb. 28) when they host Franciscan University with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
