Women’s Soccer blanked by Mount Union, 4-0

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference contest to visiting Mount Union, 4-0, on Wednesday (Oct. 14) evening at Marietta Field.  Marietta falls to 4-7-2 overall and 1-2-0 in OAC play, while Mount Union improves to 6-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the conference.

Marietta threatened early, forcing Mount Union goalkeeper Leanne Williams, into a save on a Delilah Vazquez (Pasadena, Calif./Marshall Fundamental) shot in the fourth minute. The Pioneers continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half, including chances from Jaylyn Thornton (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) and Katie Heighberger (LaGrange, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy), but the match remained scoreless until the closing minutes before intermission.

Mount Union broke through in the 37th minute when Ella Dinwiddie converted a penalty kick at the 36:08 mark, giving the Purple Raiders a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The visitors added to the advantage early in the second half with an own goal in the 49th minute to make it 2-0. Mount Union extended the lead to 3-0 in the 64th minute when Eleanore Busch finished a scoring chance off an assist from Rachel Chenos.

Marietta continued to battle, receiving shots on target from Heighberger, Thornton and Emma Slusser (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) in the final 25 minutes, but Williams and the Purple Raider defense turned away each opportunity.

Anya Stupica added the game's final goal in the 89th minute as Mount Union secured the 4-0 conference victory.

The Pioneers generated 11 shots and six shots on goal but were unable to solve Williams, who posted six saves to earn the shutout.

In goal, Francesca Agliolo (San Gabriel, Calif./Mayfield Senior) made four saves over the opening 65:50 before Maisee Carrier (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) entered and recorded three saves over the final 24:10.

Mount Union finished with a 13-11 edge in shots and a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Purple Raiders also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
