Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer earns 1-1 draw at Washington and Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie on the road at Washington and Jefferson College Wednesday (Sept. 3) evening. The Pioneers move to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Presidents are 1-0-1 overall.

"For the third game in a row, we've given up an early goal and it puts us in the position of chasing a game. Not a particularly easy task. But for the third game in a row, we played quite well after the goal," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "To me, that's clearly a bright spot. Walking away with a tie should feel decent, it doesn't. It is taking longer than we hoped to put it together."

The Pioneers found themselves trailing early in the match. Washington and Jefferson grabbed the lead less than three minutes into the match. Owen Rowlands found himself with the ball behind the Marietta defense when a through ball deflected off a Pioneer defender. Rowlands beat the keeper for a 1-0 Presidents lead.

Marietta settled down and limited Washington and Jefferson's opportunities for the remainder of the match. The Pioneers got the equalizer just before halftime.

Connor Heramb (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) sent a direct kick to the top of the box where Harry James (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) flicked the ball to Dom Porter-Kovacich (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) on the right side of the 6-yard box. Porter-Kovacich gathered the ball with his first touch and then tied the match with his second.

"It was a great first career goal by Dom," Bergin said. "He set himself up with a flick over the defender's head and then smashed it home. A goal scorer goal."

Despite a commanding 9-0 advantage on corner kicks, the Pioneers couldn't score the go-ahead goal. Both teams took 12 shots in the match with Marietta holding a slight 5-3 edge in shots on goal.

Noah Walker (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers and has two saves in the match. Logan Joseph played the first half in goal for the Presidents and allowed one goal and had two saves, while Graeme Ewart had two saves in the second half.

Marietta travels to Lexington, Kentucky this weekend for two matches. The Pioneers play at Transylvania on Saturday (Sept. 6) at 1:00 p.m. and then play Hanover at Transylvania on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 1:00 p.m.
