NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball kept the winning vibes rolling on day one of the Muskingum Invitational as they swept Washington & Jefferson College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-20). With the win the Pioneers improve to 6-1 and with the loss the Presidents fall to 5-3 overall.
Marietta rushed out the gates in set one with a 13-1 lead, getting four kills from
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington). After W&J scored four straight,
McKenzie Heil (Westlake, Ohio/Huron) stopped the rally with a kill. After a kill from
Karly Launder (Pleasant City, Ohio/Meadowbrook) and an ace from
Jayden Austermiller (Peyton, Colo./Springs Studio for Academic Excellence), the Pioneers led 19-9. Marietta then closed out with a five-point rally and claimed the set one victory, 25-11.
The Pioneers took a big lead in the second set with a pair of kills from Launder and several President attack errors, leading 10-4 in early action. Fellers and
Karley Allwood (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) fueled another run with a pair of kills apiece to push the Marietta lead to 11. The Presidents tried to fight back into the set as Faith Fetsko and Anna Boikov both provided a pair of kills apiece, but the advantage was too great. Fellers brought the final kills and Marietta won the second set, 25-16.
The third set saw Marietta fall behind early, 3-1, but they regained the lead on a five-point rally. W&J fought back with a rally to regain the lead at 8-7, but Marietta rallied again with three aces from
Kamryn Haynes (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) and retook the lead at 12-8. After some traded points, the Presidents cut the lead to two after a service ace from Fetsko. Marietta surged and put the set out of reach as they took five of the next six points, putting it at match point. Although W&J managed to score some points late, Fellers delivered the final kill and the Pioneers claimed set three, 25-20.
The Marietta offense was led by Fellers with 13 kills. Launder finished with eight kills and Allwood ended with five kills.
Emory Spitler (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) led with 22 assists. Fellers also led with 18 digs and
Keira Shannon (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) added 15 digs.
Marietta will play two matches on Saturday (Sept. 13). The Pioneers will battle Case Western Reserve University at 12 p.m. and then follow up with Mount St. Joseph University at 2 p.m.
