Muskingum holds off Women's Lacrosse comeback bid

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Marietta College's comeback bid fell short as the Pioneers lost, 16-14, at Muskingum University Wednesday (April 2) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's lacrosse. Marietta falls to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in the OAC. The Muskies improve to 6-6 on the season and 1-2 in the OAC.
 
After an early 2-0 lead, Marietta was forced to play from behind for most of the night. Muskingum led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and 8-5 at halftime. The Muskies stretched their lead to 13-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
After trading goals the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, Muskingum tallied two in a row and led 16-9 with just over 10 minutes left on the clock.
 
Marietta scored five straight goals getting to within two, 16-14, with three and a half minutes remaining in the game. Molly Dickens (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) start the late rally with an assist from Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson). Mallory Wiles (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) each scored and Adams added a pair of goals in the Pioneer run.
 
Muskingum buckled down on defense and neither team managed to score in the last 3:35 giving the Muskies the victory.
 
Adams led all scorers with five goals and three assists. Mallory Wiles (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) also tallied five goals for the Pioneers. Riley Zwagerman led Muskingum with five goals and one assist. Riley Hudock added four goals, while Hannah Heyboer had two goals and two assists.
 
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers and posted 10 saves. Malena Brady also had 10 saves in goal while playing all 60 minutes for the Muskies.
 
Marietta hosts the University of Mount Union next Wednesday (April 9) at 7:00 p.m.
