BEREA, Ohio - The Marietta College women's lacrosse team dropped a match to Baldwin Wallace University, 16-7, on Friday (April 18) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 4-11 overall and 0-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in OAC action.
Marietta got to a quick start as
Mallory Wiles (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) deposited a shot into the goal off of an assist from
Renee Mulvaney (Midland, Mich./Midland) to put the Pioneers on the board first.
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) followed two minutes later with an unassisted score and the Pioneers led by two. Mariana Melgoza answered quickly for the Yellow Jackets to cut the lead to one and BW then scored twice more to take the lead at the 4:58 mark. Wiles scored again to tie it up, but Baldwin Wallace got a score in the closing seconds to take a 4-3 lead
into the second period.
After the Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the second period, the Pioneers took advantage of BW penalty to score a man-up goal by
Fiona Betzold (Metamora, Mich./Oxford). That would be the last Pioneers score of the period, but Baldwin Wallace was not done. They would go on to extend the lead with four more scores and the Pioneers found themselves down 9-4 going into the intermission.
Marietta scored first in the third period as
Sophi Merickel (Phoenix, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) found the nets, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a pair of goals to extend the advantage to six goals. Adams scored again off of an assist from
Maggie Downard (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson), but BW closed out the quarter with two more goals led 13-6 going into the final period. Marietta only managed one more Adams goal, butthe Jackets would prevail with the final score of 16-7.
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) played all 60 minutes in the net and faced 47 shots, 30 of which were on goal, and also made 14 saves.
The Marietta offense was led by three goals from Adams. Wiles scored a pair of goals.
Alayna Francis (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) led the team with five draw controls. Adams also led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers.
The Pioneers will return to action Wednesday (April 23) when they host Otterbein University in the regular season finale. The game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
