ROME, Georgia — Berry College scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat Marietta College, 11-8, Sunday (Mar. 9) afternoon. The loss drops Marietta to 4-4 on the season. Berry improves to 10-7 overall.
Marietta jumped out to an early 5-1 lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth.
Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) had an RBI single and
Cam Russell (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) drove in a run with a ground ball in the third inning.
Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and
Will Loftus (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) each drove in a run in the fourth.
The Vikings plated a run in the first and another in the fourth. Berry tied the game with three runs in the sixth. Austin Jetmore delivered a two-run single down the left field line.
Marietta responded with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) plated the first run with a double down the left field line.
Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) drove in DeCello with a ground out to short. McKenna had an RBI single to make it 8-5.
The Pioneer lead was short-lived as Berry plated six runs in the bottom of the frame. The Viking leadoff hitter reached on an error and the flood gates opened. Berry sent 10 hitters to the plate. Andrew Pendleton had an RBI double, and Alex Knapp drove in two runs with a double to right-center.
Zach Marzetz (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) started on the mound for Marietta and worked 3.0 innings giving up one run on three hits.
Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs, three earned, on eight hits in 3.1 innings.
Brennan Stobbs (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Forest Havanis also pitched in relief for the Pioneers.
Tyler Cassidy (1-1) got the win in relief for Berry. Cassidy worked 1.0 inning and allowed no runs on one hit. Mason Snyder started and threw 3.0 innings giving up five runs, one earned, on six hits.
Russell went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Tonelli and
Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) each had two hits.
Marietta hosts North Central College on Tuesday (Mar. 11) at 3:00 p.m.
