MARIETTA, Ohio — Ohio Northern University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Marietta College Saturday (Mar. 29) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Polar Bears won game one, 15-7, and completed the sweep with a 6-5 win in the nightcap. Marietta falls to 12-4 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. Ohio Northern improves to 7-13 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.
ONU scored in every inning of game one and shutout the Pioneers over the final three innings to get the victory. The Polar Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead and pushed the margin to 8-2 before Marietta plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth to get with a run, 8-7.
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) got the fourth inning rally going with a two-run single down the left field line.
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) drove in the third run with a single through the right side of the infield.
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) capped the rally with a two-run single to right center.
Ohio Northern got RBI singles from Callie Rosser in the fifth and Carlie Schroeder in the sixth extending the Polar Bear lead to 10-7. ONU added five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Ashley Lenser (4-6) went the distance in the circle for ONU for the win. She allowed seven runs, six earned, on 14 hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts.
Camryn Kiefer (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) (7-2) started and took the loss for Marietta. She worked 5.0 innings and gave up nine runs, five earned, on 10 hits.
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) gave up six runs on eight hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) led Marietta with three hits. Kazmirski, Streets, Kiefer,
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) and
Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) each had two hits in the game.
In the second game, Jaylee Fansler drove in Rosser in the top of the sixth giving the Polar Bears the 6-5 lead. Rosser reached on a one-out single and moved to third on a single off the bat of Mariana Alejandro. Fansler grounded to short allowing Rosser to score the winning run.
Marietta plated three runs in the first inning for the early lead. Kazmirski reached on a two-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Streets drove Kazmirski in with a double and then moved to third on a wild pitch.
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) doubled to left center scoring Streets and Airy followed with a single to right knocking in Heath.
The Pioneers led 4-1 after two innings only to see ONU tie the game with three in the third. The Polar Bears went up 5-4 with a run in the fourth. But the Pioneers answered with a run in the fifth when Streets scored on a passed ball to even the score, 5-5.
Taylor Keck (1-5) got the win in relief throwing 3.2 innings and giving up one unearned run on three hits. Lenser notched a save with 2.0 innings of one-hit, shutout relief.
Emma Cozza (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) started and worked 3.1 innings allowing five runs on 10 hits. Kiefer pitched the final 1.1 innings retiring four of the five batters she faced.
Streets finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI. Heath had two hits, including a double.
Marietta travels to the University of Mount Union for an OAC doubleheader on Wednesday (April 2). The first game starts at 3:00 p.m.
