Men's Lacrosse drops a conference matchup to Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's lacrosse team took to the road for an away OAC matchup with Ohio Northern University Saturday (March 29) afternoon and was defeated, 11-3. The Pioneers fall to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. ONU improves to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in the OAC.

The first quarter saw Ohio Northern outshot Marietta, 15-2, as Pioneer goalkeeper James Cipollone (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hall) stood his ground and registered four quick saves in the period.  It was not until the 6:30 mark until someone lit up the board as ONU finally got a goal from Nathan Flynn.  The Polar Bears scored again two minutes later as Colin Willits broke through, giving ONU a 2-0 lead.  Marietta answered three minutes later as Logan Podgorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) scored on Marietta's first official shot of the matchup, cutting the lead to two, but the Polar Bears tacked on another goal in the closing seconds and took a 3-1 lead into the second period.

ONU continued to send shot after shot at the Pioneer defense, but luckily only added three goals during the second period.  Marietta was able to improve on their shot total in the period, but could only muster one score as Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored from an Aiden Evans (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) assist.  The Pioneers trailed 6-2 going into the intermission.

The Polar Bears added four scores in the third, shutting out the Pioneers to extend the lead to eight after three periods.  Sam Leininger (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) added an unassisted fourth quarter score but Marietta could not overcome the difference as the Polar Bears claimed the 11-3 consecutive victory.

Cipollone finished with 15 saves in the 26 shots on goal he faced.

The Pioneers will return home to battle Muskingum University on Wednesday (April 2). The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
