Baseball falls to Spalding

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball team lost to Spalding University by the score of 14-2 Sunday (Mar. 16) evening in the BSN Sports Invitational at Pioneer Park. Marietta falls to 9-5 on the season, while Spalding improves to 8-6 overall.
 
Golden Eagle starter Cameron Rayborn (2-0) tossed the complete game. He worked 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
 
Reece Rupert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) (0-1) started and took the loss for Marietta. He gave up seven runs, three earned, on six hits in 4.0 innings. Rupert Walked two and struck out two. Four other Pioneers threw in relief in the game.
 
Spalding took advantage of a defensive miscue in centerfield to plate four runs in the second inning and take a 4-1 lead. Marietta scored once in the first and second innings. Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) had an RBI single in the first. Drew McKenna (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) scored on a wild pitch in the second.
 
Spalding plated five runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh. A Lopez smacked a two-run double in the fifth. Evan Fisher delivered the big blow when he hit a grand slam over the wall in centerfield in the sixth inning.
 
Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and McKenna each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
 
Marietta hosts Spalding again on Monday (Mar. 17) at 3:30 p.m.
