Etta Express rolls over Case Western 10-3

MARIETTA, Ohio — Forrest Havanis (Washington, Pa./Trinity) threw six shutout innings of relief as Marietta College defeated Case Western Reserve University, 10-3, Saturday (Mar. 15) evening in the BSN Sports Invitational at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers, winners of five straight games, improve to 9-4 on the season. Case Western falls to 10-5 overall.

Havanis (2-0) took over on the mound to start the fourth inning replacing starter Luke Czarnomski (Medina, Ohio/Medina). Havanis allowed just two hits and struck out four for his second win of the season. Czarnomski worked 3.0 innings and gave up three runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Case Western jumped out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the first inning. Nick Harms homered down the left field line and Tyler Stillson followed with a shot over the wall in left center.

The Pioneers quickly tied the game in the home half of the first inning. Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) reached on a one-out walk. Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) singled through the right side of the infield moving Tonelli to second. A sac bunt from Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) moved the runners to second and third.

With two outs, Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) struck out but reached base safely when the third strike pitch got away from the catcher for a wild pitch that allowed Tonelli to score. Marietta then executed a first and third double steal and Fiehrer scored making it 2-2.

Case Western loaded the bases with no outs in the third. Following a strikeout, Logan Andreyko grounded out to the first baseman allowing Jack Anderson to score the go ahead run.

Marietta plated three runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-3 Pioneer lead. Thomson Babineau (Scituate, Mass./Calvary Chapel) led off with a single and scored on a double off the bat of Cam Russell (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Tonelli was hit by a pitch and Fiehrer bunted both runners into scoring position. Magill followed with a single up the middle scoring Russell and Tonelli.

The Pioneers added two insurance runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth inning. Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) knocked in a run in the fifth with a ground ball in the infield. Fiehrer and Magill each had RBI singles in the eighth.

Charlie Griffith (2-1) started on the mound for the Spartans and got the loss. He gave up five runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Four other Spartans toed the rubber for Case Western.

Magill finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Fiehrer and Babineau also had two hits in the game.
