MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College swept the season series against Baldwin Wallace University with a 78-75 victory Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers finish the season with an 11-14 overall record and 5-13 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace finishes 10-15 overall and 6-12 in the OAC.
"I'm so happy that we can celebrate our seniors with a win. It's been a tough year so it was nice to be able to gut this one out," Marietta head coach
Jon VanderWal said. "We were so close to blowing the game open and, give them credit, BW made some shots and took the lead. I'm proud of our guys. We made some big plays and got the lead right back and then held on for the win."
Jayden Bradshaw (Blanchester, Ohio/Fayetteville-Perry) and De'Ovion price each made a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the game to secure the win for the Pioneers. Bradshaw sank his with 39 seconds remaining to give Marietta a four-point lead, 76-72. Following a BW layup and free throw, Price nailed two with five seconds on the clock for the final 78-75 score.
Marietta jumped on top in the first half as Price scored the first four points of the game. The score stayed close throughout the first 10 minutes as the Yellow Jackets held a 12-10 lead. The Pioneers went on a 15-0 run building a 13-point lead, 25-12, with 8:21 left in the first half.
Balck-to-back three-pointers from Bradshaw and
Frank Waganfeald (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) triggered the run for Marietta. Bradshaw added an old-fashioned three-point play and Waganfeald capped the drive with a jumper. Marietta led by as many as 15 points in the first half and took a 39-27 lead into halftime.
Baldwin Wallace slowly chipped away at the Pioneer lead. Two free throws from Isaac Richardson with 5:11 left in the game cut the margin to two points, 63-61. Following a missed three-pointer from Marietta, Ray Ellington drained a triple for BW giving the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the second half, 64-63, at the 4:38 mark.
The Pioneers got layups from
Jack Main (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) and Waganfeald to regain the lead, 72-69. Myles Reynolds responded with a three-pointer for BW to tie the game. Waganfeald scored on a layup with 1:20 remaining. BW turned the ball over on its next possession and was forced to put Marietta on the line. Bradshaw and Price secured the win with their four free throws in the final seconds.
Waganfeald led four Pioneers in double figures with 22 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Price finished with 21 points and six assists. Bradshaw chipped in with 11 points, while
Landry Palata (St. Mary's, W.Va./Teays Valley Christian) added 10 points.
Ellington led all scorers with 24 points for the Yellow Jackets. Myles Reynolds added 15 points, while Titus Baskerville had nine points and six rebounds.
The Pioneers say goodbye to five seniors. Waganfeald, Price, Main, Palata, and
Ryan Magill (Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Union) finish their careers in the Navy Blue and White.
