Big second half leads Capital over Men's Basketball

MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University used a 55-point second half to come from behind and defeat Marietta College, 82-80, Wednesday (Feb. 12) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The loss drops Marietta to 10-12 overall and 4-11 in the OAC. The Comets improve to 9-13 overall and 6-9 in the OAC.
 
The teams traded baskets through the first four minutes of the game until Marietta went on a 10-2 run to take a six-point lead, 15-9, with 12 minutes left in the first half. A layup from Justin Nixon at the 8:05 mark pulled Capital within two, 24-22.
 
Marietta exploded for 15 straight points building a 15-point lead. Jayden Bradshaw (Blanchester, Ohio/Fayetteville-Perry) scored 10 of the Pioneer points during the run hitting a three-pointer and a pair of layups to go along with three free throws. The Pioneers took a 46-27 lead into halftime.
 
Capital came out strong in the second half and cut the Pioneer lead to eight points, 53-45, on a three-pointer from McKane Finkenbine five minutes into the period. Marietta's Danny Flood (Valley City, Ohio/Buckeye) responded with a pair of layups and a three-pointer pushing the margin back 17 points, 64-47, midway through the half.
 
The Comets continued to battle and went on a 17-5 run closing to within five points, 69-64, with seven minutes left on the clock. Capital nailed five three-pointers during the run, including four from Alex Eyink.
 
Marietta clung to the lead until Se'Ron Calloway-White scored on a layup with 3:31 left in the game giving Capital its first lead, 73-72, since the opening minutes of the game. Three free throws from Eljae Deas pushed the Comet lead to four, 76-72
 
Capital led by three, 80-77, with 20 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, De'Ovion Price (River Rouge, Mich./River Rouge) drained a three-pointer to tie the game, 80-80, with 10 seconds left on the clock. Capital attacked the basket and drew a foul sending Calloway-White to the line with two seconds left. He converted both free throws to secure the 82-80 win for the Comets.
 
Bradshaw led five Pioneers in double figures with 16 points. Flood finished with 14 points, while Frank Waganfeald (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) and Price each chipped in with 13 points. Jake Singleton (Senecaville, Ohio/Meadowbrook) added 12 points. Waganfeald grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
 
Eyink led the Comets with 17 points. Finkenbine finished with 16 points. Dom Moegerlehad 11 points and seven rebounds, while Calloway-White added 10 points.
 
Marietta travels to Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Feb. 15) for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
