COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — Five different Pioneers scored in overtime as Marietta College defeated the host school, Ursinus College, 100-97 in the championship game of the Bear Bash Tip-Off Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon. Marietta improves to 2-0 on the season, while Ursinus falls to 1-1 overall.
"Elijah on day one and Jake on day two. Both seniors playing like it's their last game. Not only did they produce with big scoring numbers, but they made other big time plays to help us win," Marietta head coach
Andy Bucheit said. "Everyone was a part of these two wins. We had guys affecting winning from the bench to the guys on the floor. There is still much to improve on, but this team has shown a hunger to learn and to compete every day."
Jake Singleton (Senecaville, Ohio/Meadowbrook) drained seven three-pointers and finished with 35 points to earn tournament Most valuable Player honors.
Elijah Harden (Hermitage, Pa./Kennedy Catholic), who scored 34 points on Friday, finished with 18 points in the championship game and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Mason Wisniewski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Marys) notched his first double-double with points and 11 rebounds.
Jai Guerra-Howard (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain) chipped in with 15 points and five assists, while
Deuce Blake (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) added eight points and seven boards.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as neither team led by more than seven points. Ther were 16 lead changes and three ties in the opening period. Nick Nocito hit a pair of free throws with 53 seconds left in the half to give Ursinus a 51-44 lead. Harden answered with a three-pointer to make it 51-47 at halftime.
Baskets from Harden and Blake to start the second half tied the game, 51-51. Neither team managed to take control of the game and a dunk from
Mason Wisniewski (Farmington Hills, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Marys) with 11:06 left in regulation gave the Pioneers a five-point lead, 70-65.
Marietta went up by seven points several times through the final minutes of the period and led 84-77 after a Guerra-Howard layup with 2:09 left. But the Bears scored the next seven points tying the game, 84-84, with 45 seconds on the clock.
A layup from Wisniewski gave the lead back to the Pioneers and Jamie Murphy sent the game into overtime with a basket in the final seconds of regulation. The game headed to overtime tied, 86-86.
The Pioneers built a five-point lead in overtime. A pair of Wisniewski free throws with 3:06 on the clock gave Marietta a 93-88 lead. The Pioneers never trailed again and a layup from
Trenton Collins (Newark, Ohio/Utica) with 19 seconds sealed the victory. Ursinus missed a pair of three-pointers as time expired.
Mohamed Toure led the Bears with 23 points. Murphy had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Luke Nieman added 14 points, while Nocito finished with 13 points.
Marietta returns home to host the annual Shrine Tournament Friday and Saturday (Nov. 14-15). The Pioneers play La Roche University on Friday at 8:00 p.m. Manchester and California Lutheran play the first game at 6:00 p.m. Friday. The Consolation game is Saturday at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Championship game at 8:00 p.m.
