Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Record night from Bolin not enough as Men's Soccer falls at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Parker Bolin (Albany, Ohio/Alexander) scored his second hat trick of the season, but it wasn't enough as Marietta College lost at Wilmington College by the score of 7-3 Saturday (Nov. 1) evening in men's soccer action. The Pioneers finish the season with a 5-12-2 overall record and 2-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington improves to 13-4-2 overall and 6-2 in the OAC.

"The season did not go or finish the way we expected," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "We struggled defensively all year. The staff and I have so much to do and that starts Monday. We will get it fixed."

Bolin scored his first goal in the 39th minute and then added second half goals in the 62nd and 89th minutes. He becomes just the third player in Pioneer history to record two hat tricks in the same season. Gavin Reed did it in 2000 and Jamie Malone accomplished the feat in 1984.

With his three goals against the Quakers, Bolin surpassed Malone and set the Marietta College single season record for goals with 19. Malone held the record with 18 goals in 1983.

"Coming into the game we knew the record was within reach, but against a quality team like Wilmington, admittedly it was a bit of a long shot," Bergin said. "When he broke it the celebration that ensued was something that I may never see again. It was something else. The team was so excited for him.

"I played with Jamie (Malone) for four years. He was a special player," Bergin continued. "The fact that it stood for so long speaks to Jamie's quality. Parker has that same quality on and off the field. I'm so happy for him."

While Bolin was notching a hat trick for the Pioneers, Parker Burke was enjoying a special night for Wilmington. Burke tallied four goals in the match, including three in the first half. Eli Eyrich, Aidan Barnishin, and Vigor Karlsson each scored one goal for the Quakers.

The Pioneers will say goodbye to eight seniors on this year's squad. In addition to Bolin, Will Freson (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin), Petar Mijic-Barisic (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland), Alec Ellis (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington), Sam Holthaus (Columbus, Ohio/University), Lee Miller (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), Braulio Rosas-Clouse (Athens, Ohio/Athens), and Mohammed Cherif (Pickerington, Ohio/West Haven) finished their careers in the Navy Blue and White.
