ALLIANCE, Ohio — Mount Union hit six of eight free throws in the final 30 seconds to beat Marietta College, 82-77, Wednesday (Jan. 8) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The loss drops Marietta to 7-5 overall and 1-4 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the OAC.
A layup from
Frank Waganfeald (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) with 1:01 left in the game gave Marietta its first lead of the night, 77-76. Waganfeald's bucket capped a 5-0 Pioneer run.
Following the Waganfeald layup, a Marietta foul put the Purple Raiders on the line with 44 seconds on the clock. Mount Union missed both free throws and Marietta grabbed the rebound but quickly turned the ball over.
The Pioneers were whistled for another foul and this time Jarrett Taylor converted both free throws retaking the lead, 78-77, with 31 seconds on the clock.
On the ensuing possession,
De'Ovion Price (River Rouge, Mich./River Rouge) was fouled. He missed both freebies and Marietta was forced to foul the Purple Raiders. Marcus Steele made one of two free throws giving Mount Union a 79-77 lead with 14 seconds left.
Marietta missed a shot on its next possession and the Purple Raiders secured the rebound. Once again, the Pioneers were forced to foul and Mount Union put the game away with three free throws in the final second of the game.
Waganfeald led the Pioneers with 18 points to go along with six rebounds.
Jack Main (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) had 16 points and a team best eight boards. Price added 11 points and six assists.
Christian Parker had 17 points to lead the Purple Raiders. Chance Casenhiser and Taylor each had 14 points. Taylor notched a double-double with 10 rebounds. Elijah Farrington finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Steele had 10 points.
Marietta returns home to host Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Jan. 11) at 4:00 p.m.
