BEREA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team fell behind quick in the first period and could not overcome a hot-shooting Baldwin Wallace squad, that finished 12-of-20 from three-point range, and was defeated by the Ohio Athletic Conference leading Yellow Jackets, 81-38, on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon. Marietta falls to 10-5 overall and 4-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace improves to 14-1 on the season and remains undefeated in conference games.
The Pioneers struck early on their first possession as
Paige Tolson (Guysville, Ohio/Federal Hocking) nailed a three-pointer on her first attempt. What followed was an eight-minute scoring drought as Marietta missed their next 13 shots and, during that stretch, Baldwin Wallace rattled off 18 points. Caely Ressler nailed a pair of three pointers and followed with a layup to get the Yellow Jacket offense on its way. Later in the period, Ava Wilkerson hit a three and Emily Irwin converted a pair of free throws on the next possession to give BW a 15-point advantage.
Abby Garner (Macedonia, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) finally got a layup to fall in the final seconds, but the Pioneers trailed 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets ran off the first seven points in the second quarter to extend the lead, but experienced a four-minute scoring draught of their own midway through. The Pioneers could not take make up too much ground, though. BW began to pound the paint with four consecutive layup and, after another pair of three pointers from Ressler, finished off a 14-2 run.
Kayla Peterson (Independence, Ky./Scott) came off the bench to score a layup in the closing seconds but Marietta took a 43-18 deficit into intermission.
The Pioneers scored the first points of the second half as Tolson hit yet again from behind the arc, but the Yellow jackets answered immediately with a trey of their own.. Minute later, BW went on a 11-3 run to extend the lead to 31. In the final minute,
Hannah Kroft (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) scored a layup but Baldwin Wallace led 66-30 lead going into the final period.
BW outscored Marietta in the final period, 15-8, to complete the rout and cruised to a 81-38 victory.
Tolson led Marietta with nine points. Hill finished with 6 points and five rebounds.
Ressler paced the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 25 points, shooting 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
Marietta returns home to the Ban Johnson Arena this Wednesday (Jan. 22) for an OAC matchup with Capital University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
