MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College scored just over a minute into the second half and posted a shutout to earn a 1-0 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson College Sunday (Sept. 1) in men's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 1-1 overall, while the Presidents slip to 0-1 on the young season.
"Today was a significantly better performance from the team," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We made some adjustments and rotated some players, and it worked today. There is still a lot to work on, but we will take the win and move onto the next one."
Both teams had good scoring opportunities early in the match. Marietta's
Reggie Grayek (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Prep.) had a pair of shots in the box that were both saved by President keeper Charles Boldosser. Washington & Jefferson's Alonte Harris found himself one-on-one with the MC keeper in the box in the 13th minute but pushed his shot wide left.
The teams headed into halftime scoreless. Marietta fired off 10 shots in the first half, while W&J took four.
A critical turnover by the Presidents led to the lone goal of the match. W&J turned the ball over five yards outside their own penalty box and Marietta's
Lee Miller (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) made the pay for the mistake. Miller took a touch to gather the ball and then riffled a shot into the upper right corner of the net for the game winner.
Marietta's defense limited the Presidents to just five shots in the match and only two on goal.
Andrew Stein (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard) got his first start of the season in goal for the Pioneers and recorded two saves and MC's first clean sheet of 2024.
Marietta travels to Virginia next weekend for a pair of matches. The Pioneers play at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday (Sept. 7) at 3 p.m. and at Bridgewater College on Sunday (Sept. 8) at 3 p.m.
