BEREA, Ohio — Baldwin Wallace University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Saturday (April 6) afternoon. The Yellow jackets won the first game, 8-0 in five innings, and then completed the sweep with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory in game two. BW improves to 12-8 overall and 4-0 in the OAC, while Marietta slips to 7-12 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.
Baldwin Wallace jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one. The Yellow Jackets added three more runs in the third for the run-rule victory. BW got on the board on an RBI single from Maddie Lester. Lexy Coggins drove in a run with an infield single and Gillian Ryser plated two runs with a single up the middle.
In the third inning, Lucia Wolford led off with a double and scored on a double from Bridie Bricker. A third double off the bat of Steph Mraz plated Bricker. Emily Mau knocked in Mraz with a single up the middle.
Marisa Hall (6-3) went the distance in the circle for the Yellow Jackets. She tossed 5.0 shutout innings allowing just three hits. She walked one and struck out six.
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) (0-1) started and took the loss for the Pioneers. Kazmirski worked 0.2 innings and allowed five runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and
Lily Williams (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) threw in relief for Marietta.
In the second game of the day, Marietta took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh only to surrender three runs to the Yellow Jackets. Kazmirski and
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) staked the Pioneers to a 2-0 lead with RBI doubles in the fifth inning.
Baldwin Wallace cut the deficit in half on an RBI triple from Bricker in the bottom of the sixth. Brown made it 3-1 with a single in the top of the seventh that score
Jillian Strecansky (Columbiana, Ohio/South Range).
Mraz led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. Two flyouts had the Pioneers one out away from victory. Walks to Lester and Mia Maddamma loaded the bases. Wolford tied the game with a two-run single to right-center and then Coggins followed with a single to right field scoring Maddamma with the winning run.
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) (2-4) was tagged with the loss throwing 6.2 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits with six walks and three strikeouts. Hall (7-3) picked up her second complete-game win of the day allowing three runs on six hits in 7.0 innings. Hall walked three and struck out six.
Kazmirski had two doubles for the Pioneers. Brown had two hits, including a double and two RBI.
Marietta plays at Denison University on Tuesday (April 9). The first game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
