MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College split an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Heidelberg University Saturday (April 27) afternoon. Heidelberg won the first game, 12-4, and Marietta won game two, 9-0 in five innings. The Pioneers are 15-18 overall and 7-9 in the OAC. Heidelberg moves to 13-25 overall and 6-10 in the OAC.
The Student Princes used a six-run second inning to build a 10-0 lead in the first game. Marietta plated two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth cutting the lead to 10-4. Heidelberg added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) got the Pioneers on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
Breanna Zirkle (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) plated the second run with a single to left.
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) belted a two-run home run to centerfield in the fifth.
Jessica Voitko (4-12) started in the circle for Heidelberg and got the win. She threw 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Kailyn Kroll worked the final 2.1 innings allowing two hits with one strikeout.
Zirkle (5-6) started the game and took the loss for Marietta. She allowed six runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings.
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) pitched the final 5.2 innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) went 3-for-4 and Airy finished with two hits, including a double. Brown had two RBI on the home run.
In the second game, Marietta broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Shelby Metzger (Beavercreek Township, Ohio/Beavercreek) and
Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington) had RBI singles and Kazmirski launched a three-run home run to left.
The Pioneers plated four runs in the fifth for the run-rule victory. Kazmirski drove in the first run with a sac fly and then Brown ended the game with a towering three-run walk-off home run to left.
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) (4-3) got the complete game victory in the circle for Marietta. She scattered three hits and struck out one over 5.0 innings of work for the shutout.
Caitlin Dems (2-7) started and got the loss. She gave up one run on five hits in 3.0 innings. Kroll was charged with five runs, one earned, on five hits in 1.1 innings, while Voitko allowed three runs on three hits in 0.1 innings.
Brown finished 4-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI. Campbell and
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) each had two hits, while Kazmirski finished with four RBI and a home run.
Marietta hosts Capital University on Sunday (May 5) for Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
