WORCESTER, Massachusetts — The Marietta College men's rowing team raced Tufts and Worcester Polytechnic Institute Sunday (April 21) morning on Lake Quinsigamond. The Pioneers finished second in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight races.
"It was really good racing today and a nice way to close out the regular season and what has been a very trying April with all of the flooding," Marietta head coach
Greg Myhr said. "Many thanks to WPI and Tufts for allowing us into their long-standing Baker Cup race."
Tufts jumped out to an early lead in the varsity eight race with Marietta and WPI level for the first 500 meters. Marietta slowly pulled away from WPI and was withing striking distance of Tufts. Tufts crossed the line with a seat or two of open water on the Pioneers, while Marietta had a full length on WPI.
Tufts posted a winning time of 6:01.2 with Marietta finishing in 6:05.26 and WPI in third place with a time of 6:07.76.
"We knew that Tufts would be formidable, and we suspected that we were very close in speed with WPI," Myhr said. "That's exactly how the race played out. I thought our guys rowed a gutsy race to wrest it away from WPI and fight Tufts as well as they did."
The second varsity eight race played out much the same as the varsity eights. Tufts was the first to the line finishing in 6:10.1 with Marietta (6:20.32) in second and WPI (6:27.3) in third.
Up next for the Pioneers is the Dad Vail Regatta on May 10-11 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
