WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania — Washington and Jefferson College defeated Marietta College by the score of 9-7 Sunday (April 21) afternoon in nonconference baseball action. The loss drops Marietta to 17-15 on the season. The Presidents improve to 19-9 overall.
Washington and Jefferson scored six runs in the first three innings to take an early 6-1 lead. Marietta chipped away at the lead scoring two in the fifth and four in the sixth to go in front, 7-6.
Austin Amburgey (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) got Marietta on the board with an RBI single in the top of the third.
Cael Magill (Atco, N.J./King's Christian) lined a two-run double down the leftfield line in the fifth.
Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg) and
Ben Kaplin (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) had RBI singles in the sixth, while Amburgey put the Pioneers in front with a two-run single to right field.
The Presidents tied the game, 7-7, with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Drew Garth gave WJC the lead back with a solo home run to right field in the eighth. Brody Bartenstein made it 9-7 with an RBI single.
Marietta got a runner on in the ninth with two outs, but a ground out ended the game.
Brendan Cruz (2-1) threw 3.1 shutout innings to get the win in relief. He allowed two hits and walked one. Bobby Budacki started and pitched 4.2 innings giving up three runs on five hits. Brandon Bastian allowed four runs in 1.0 inning of work.
Braden Shepherd (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) started on the mound for the Pioneers and gave up two runs on three hits in 1.0 innings.
Sam Johnson (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) was charged with four runs on six hits in 2.0 innings, while
Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic) worked 1.0 shutout inning.
Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) (0-1) took the loss giving up three runs on six hits in the final 4.0 innings.
Kaplin and Amburgey each had three hits in the game for the Pioneers. Kaplin scored twice, while Amburgey drove in three runs.
Marietta travels to No. 2 ranked Denison University on Thursday (April 25) for a single nonconference game at 6:00 p.m.
