COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Capital University, 19-2, on Wednesday (April 17) evening. With the win the Comets improve to 6-8 overall, 5-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 7-7 on the season, 4-3 in the OAC.
Marietta had trouble getting anything going on the offensive side in the first period, but Capital jumped out to a big first quarter lead with six scores, including a pair of scores from Mason Spaulding. Marietta finally got on the board with six minutes left in the half as
Sam Leininger (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) scored off of a
Thomas Zerman (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) assist. The Comets closed the period with four more goals and led 11-1 at the half.
After battling back and forth for the first four minutes of the second half,
Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to nine, but Capital answered with a pair of scores to lead 13-2 heading into the final period. The Comets further extended the lead in final period and would go on to win, 19-2.
Ben Millard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) played the first in goal for the Pioneers, he faced 20 shots on goal, making nine saves. James Cippollone worked the second half and faced 12 shots on goal and made four saves.
Neal won 7-of-16 faceoffs and picked up seven groundballs to lead the Pioneers.
Marietta will return to the field this Saturday (April 20) when they host John Carroll University, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
