LORE CITY, Ohio — With one swing of the bat, Marietta College senior third baseman
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) became the school's all-time leader in career home runs and career runs batted in Saturday (April 13) afternoon. Brown launched her record-setting, three-run shot over the rightfield fence in the third inning of game one. She now has 27 career homers and 120 career runs batted in.
The Pioneers swept Wilmington College posting a 5-3 win in game one and then completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory in game two. Marietta improves to 11-12 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington falls to 13-12-1 on the season and 1-7 in the OAC.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning of game one, Brown stepped to the plate with
Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington) on second base and
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) on at first base. Brown lined the ball over the fence in right field tying the game, 3-3.
Marietta added two more runs in the fifth inning. Campbell reached on an error and Kazmirski made the Quakers pay with a two-run home run to left field.
While the Pioneer offense was hitting the long ball,
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) (4-4) was dominating in the circle. Middleton held Wilmington without a hit over the final 4.0 innings for the win. She walked two and struck out three.
Breanna Zirkle (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) started and worked 3.0 innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits.
Aiyana Hancock (7-5) went the distance for the Quakers and gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings. She walked one and struck out three.
Kazmirski and Middleton each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
Brown and Middleton staked the Pioneers to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Brown slugged a two-run home run to center field and Middelton followed with a solo shot to left.
Wilmington battled back to tie the game, 3-3 with a run in the second and two more in the fourth. The Quakers got solo homers from Judaea Wilson and Alasandra Spears in the fourth frame.
The Pioneers responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Marietta took advantage of two Quakers errors to plate three unearned runs in the frame.
After scoring a run in the fifth to get within two runs, 6-4, Wilmington tried to rally in the seventh. The Quakers pushed one run across and had the tying run in scoring position when the game ended.
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) (3-2) started and got the win pitching 4.0 innings and giving up three runs on three hits. Middleton worked 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits before turning the ball over to
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy). Walters earned her first save of the season allowing one hit in 0.2 innings.
Hillary Huffer (5-3) started and took the loss for Wilmington. She threw 3.2 innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on just three hits. Kori Cornett tossed 2.1 shutout innings.
Brown, Middleton and
Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) had Marietta three hits in game two.
Marietta hosts Mount Union on Sunday (April 14). The games are scheduled to be played at Buckeye Trail High School starting at 12:00 p.m.
