Etta Express rolls over Wilmington

XENIA, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball team posted a pair of run-rule victories over Wilmington College Saturday (April 13) afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game 14-1 in seven innings and then took the second game, 17-0 in seven innings. Marietta improves to 13-12 overall and 5-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington falls to 2-21 on the season and 0-8 in the OAC.

The Pioneers scored 12 runs in the first three innings of game one. Back-to-back home runs from Alex Richter (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Austin Amburgey (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) highlighted the early barrage. Richter launched a two-run shot down the right field line and Amburgey followed with a solo home run to right-center accounting for Marietta's three runs in the second inning.

Wilmington got its lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Eli Hollingsworth led off with a double and moved to third on a single from Jared Lammert. He later scored on a sac fly from Evan Kelsey.

Marietta got the run back quickly when Ben Kaplin (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) homered to right-center in the top of the fourth.

Trent Valentine (Byesville, Ohio/Cambridge) (4-1) started on the mound and got the win allowing one run on four hits in 4.0 innings. He walked one and struck out six. Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) recorded a save throwing 3.0 shutout innings giving up four hits and striking out five.

Luke Chappie (1-4) started for Wilmington and was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings of work. Four other Quakers threw in the game.

Richter finished 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) had a pair of doubles. Kaplin had two hits, including the home run, while Cole Rieman (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) had two singles.

In the second game, freshman Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) (2-3) pitched the complete game shutout. He threw 7.0 innings and allowed six hits while striking out eight.

Once again Marietta grabbed an early lead with one run in the first and five more in the second. The Pioneers added five runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth.

Valentine delivered the big blow in the second inning with a bases-loaded triple. Kaplin added a two-run double in the fourth. Thomson Babineau (Scituate, Mass./Calvary Chapel) drove in a run with an infield single in the sixth and had an RBI double in the seventh.

Jeremy Tonelli (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) led the Pioneers with three hits. Nick Bonnizzio (Hudson, Ohio/Twinsburg), Babineau, and Kaplin each had two hits in the game.

Drew Tower (0-2) started on the mound for Wilmington and took the loss. He gave up six runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. The Quakers used four other pitchers in relief.
