Reich overtime goal lifts Men's Lacrosse over Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Tyler Reich (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin) scored just over a minute into overtime giving Marietta College a 10-9 win over Muskingum University Wednesday (April 10) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action. The Pioneers improve to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. Muskingum falls to 7-6 on the season and 1-4 in the OAC.

Pioneer long stick midfielder Barrett Lindell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) forced a Muskie turnover at midfield, scooped up the ground ball and raced downfield. He found Reich on the left side of the crease and Reich fired off the game winning goal.

"Our guys continue to fight no matter what cards we are dealt," Marietta head coach Ben Suchomma said. "I love this group and everything we are about. I'm excited to keep grinding and keep focusing on the process."

Muskingum outscored the Pioneers 7-2 in the second half, including 4-1 in the fourth quarter, completing a furious comeback. Tyler Workman tied the game, 9-9, with 1:17 remaining on the clock. The Muskies won the ensuing faceoff and had a chance to win the game in regulation when a shot from Evan Cosgrove hit the post with just 16 seconds left.

Marietta's Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) won the faceoff to start overtime. Same Leininger got a shot off that was aved by Trevor Connolly. The Muskie clear was broken up by Lindell's caused turnover and groundball which led to Reich's goal.

The Pioneers dominated the first half. Following a goal by Muskingum to start the game, the Pioneers scored three straight as Thomas Zerman (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South), Logan Podgorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park), and Neal all found the back of the net.

Spencer Zecchini scored for Muskingum making it 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. Four Pioneers goals in the second quarter gave Marietta a 7-2 lead at halftime. Leininger, Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), Zerman, and Podgorski accounted for the second quarter goals.

The teams traded goals to start the third quarter and Marietta held an 8-3 lead with 6:43 left in the period. Muskingum turned up the offensive intensity and scored four straight goals to get within one, 8-7, with just over six minutes remaining in regulation.

Reich scored with an assist from Neal to give the Pioneers a two-goal lead. But Muskingum answered with two straight goals sending the game into overtime.

Four Pioneers scored two goals including Neal, Podgorski, Serman, and Reich. Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) added one goals and four assists for six total points. Franklin and Lindell caused two turnovers each. Neal picked up five ground balls, while Podgorski had four, and Neal, Franklin, and Caden Alkire (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) had three each.

Ben Millard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) started in goal for the Pioneers and recorded seven saves while giving two goals in the first half. James Cipollone (Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hall) played the second half and overtime in goal and allowed seven goals. He made six saves.

Marietta travels to Ohio Northern University on Saturday (April 13) for a 1:00 p.m. faceoff. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Marietta, but due to the ongoing cleanup from last week's flooding, the game was moved to Ada.
