CLERMONT, Florida — The Marietta College softball team lost a pair of games Monday (Mar. 4) afternoon. Calvin University downed the Pioneers, 7-2, and then Marietta fell to Bethany Lutheran College, 8-2.
Calvin (2-0 overall) scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed in the game. The Knights took advantage of three walks in the frame. Calvin added one run in the second, two in the fifth and one more in the seventh.
Marietta got on the board in the second inning on a solo home run from
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville). The Pioneers added a second run in the seventh on an RBI double off the bat of
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton).
Emma Ludema (1-0) went the distance in the circle for the Knights. She allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) (0-1) started and took the loss. Walters threw 4.2 innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on five hits.
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) worked the final 2.1 innings and was charged with one unearned run on two hits.
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) went 2-for-4 with a double. Brown had the home run and White had the double.
Bethany Lutheran (6-6) built a 6-0 lead with two runs in the first and four more in the third. The Vikings added a pair of runs in the fourth. Emily Nelson and Jade Krenik each had two-run singles in the third inning for BLC.
Marietta scored one run in the fourth and another in the sixth. Brown reached on a one-out double in the fourth. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout off the bat of
Jordan Cholley (North Canton, Ohio/Glenoak).
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) reached on a double in the sixth and moved to third on another BLC wild pitch.
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) followed with a line drive single to center field driving in Kazmirski.
Kayla Senne (4-5) tossed a complete game for the Vikings allowing two runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out eight. Walters (0-2) started and took the loss. She allowed six runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. Three other Pioneers toed the rubber for Marietta in the game.
Kazmirski had a pair of doubles and Brown finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Marietta plays Defiance College at 1:30 p.m. and Illinois College at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Mar. 5).
