MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Washington and Jefferson College, 22-12, on Wednesday (March 27) evening. The win improves the Presidents to 1-5, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 5-5.
"Despite the result, I saw so many great things tonight from the team," said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "The goal was to play together and we saw that all over the field. There was great movement on attack, some amazing looks and great finishes. I'm really proud of the effort and enthusiasm from the team. We now have time to regroup and tighten things up as we go back to conference games."
Washington and Jefferson exploded for eight goals over the better part of the first period, fueled by three scores from Aisa Uhler.
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) finally slowed the momentum of the Presidents by scoring at the 1:39 mark. W&J tallied one more score in the closing seconds and took a 9-1 lead into the second quarter.
Marietta tried to inch back into the second quarter with early goals
Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford) and
Mallory Wiles (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). Later in the period,
Sophi Merickel (Phoenix, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) scored a goal from an assist from
Maggie Downard (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson) and, on the ensuing possession, Adams scored a fast break goal after collecting the draw control. The goal cut the lead on half, 10-5. Wiles and Adams each added another goal, but W&J closed the half with three scores and took a 14-7 lead going into the half.
The Pioneers got the first score of the third period as Wiles found the back of the net yet again, but the Presidents broke it open with a trio of goals, two from Caleigh Bogats, to extend the lead to 17-8. Roeder and Adams both scored again but the Presidents still led by eight going into the final period.
Wiles led the fourth with a goal but W&J answered with four more goals. Wiles tacked on one more goal in the fourth but the difference was too much to overcome. The Presidents cruised to a 22-12 victory.
