MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's lacrosse team dropped a close matchup to Chatham University, 10-7, Saturday (March 16) afternoon. The Pioneers drop to 4-3 on the season, while Chatham improves to 2-3 overall.
"We knew today would be a tough, close game," Marietta head coach
Malory Nadrah said. "It's a frustrating loss. Their draw team gave them the momentum and possessions to win it. There are positives in the loss, we had a lot of players step up and aid in transition. So many good 1v1 defensive stops."
The Cougars and Pioneers battled throughout the first period in defensive struggle but Marietta was able to strike first as
Natalie Cocco (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) broke free and found the net off of a great pass from
Mallory Wiles (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). Chatham got a pair of scores from Bailey Donofrio and took a 2-1 lead into the second period.
The Pioneers took control of the second period and they held Chatham scoreless and roared back into the lead.
Jordan Jeffries (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) tied up the contest ay the 9:00 mark.
Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford),
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), and
Renee Mulvaney (Midland, Mich./Midland) added goals over the remainder of the half and Marietta led 5-2 going into intermission.
In the third period, Wilkes broke through and scored at the 12:30 mark, giving the Pioneers a seemingly comfortable 6-2 advantage. Chatham came alive over the next six minutes as they filled the net five times, including three scores from Felicia Hutter. Marietta would trail 7-6 going into the final quarter.
Neither team could generate any offense for the first eight minutes of the fourth period, but Marietta finally broke through with a score from
Sophi Merickel (Phoenix, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) to tie the game at seven. The Cougars regained the lead with a score from Sam Beall-Dennel with less than five minutes remaining and then got two insurance goals in the final minutes. Marietta could not overcome the difference and Chatham would go on to the 10-7 victory.
Abby
May played all 60 minutes in the net for the Pioneers. She faced 32 shots, 20 which were on goal, and made 10 saves.
"Abby played another great game," concluded Coach Nadrah. "We will continue to work towards playing to our potential as OAC play is forthcoming."
Marietta will battle Wittenberg University this Wednesday (March 20) with a scheduled 4:30 p.m. start.
