WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team traveled to Wilmington College Friday (Nov. 1) evening to try and complete a perfect Ohio Athletic Conference schedule and they did just that as the defeated the Quakers in straight sets, 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-19). With the win the Pioneers improve to 21-0 overall and 9-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the loss the Quakers fall to 5-20 overall and 1-8 in OAC action.
In the first set, Marietta jumped out to a 6-2 lead as all of the front line provided kills and
Keira Shannon (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) converted a pair of service aces.
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) scored on a kill during a four-point run to give the Pioneers a 12-5 lead. Marietta took control after scoring on nine of the next 11 possessions, getting kills from Fellers,
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton), and
Annabelle Hacker (Centerville, Ohio/Alter).
Ella Boyer (Bay Village, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) brought a kill to complete the final four-point rally and Marietta made quick work of set one, winning 25-8.
Hacker got the Pioneers going in set two with a pair of kills and Marietta lead 5-4 in early action. Fellers extended the lead to four with a trio of kills. Marietta would then rattle off seven straight points, fueled by a pair of kills from
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton), to take a commanding 17-8 lead. The Quakers tried to chip away but could not overcome the deficit. Fellers scored the final three kills for the Pioneers and Marietta took set two, 25-14.
The third set was close early, with Marietta holding a slight 7-6 lead, but the Pioneers began to distance themselves once again. Hacker scored on a pair of kills as the Pioneers would take five of the next seven point to lead 12-8.
Emily Piehler (Medina, Ohio/Medina) came off the bench to score a pair of kills to keep the lead at four. After some traded possessions, the Pioneers closed out the action with a kill from Silva and a pair of aces from
Emma Weiseman (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) to secure the victory, 25-19.
The Marietta offense was led by
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) with 12 kills and Silva with 11 kills. Hacker and Piehler pitched in with seven kills apiece. Hacker led the Pioneers with four blocks.
Emory Spitler (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) dished out 37 assists. Fellers also led the defensive effort with a team high 11 digs.
Marietta will return home Friday (Nov. 8) for their last regular season matchup as they celebrate Senior Day. The Pioneers will battle Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference matchup set to begin at 7 p.m.
