BEXLEY, Ohio — No. 11 ranked Marietta College stayed perfect on the season with a 3-0 win at Capital University Wednesday (Oct. 16) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball action. The Pioneers won 28-26, 25-16, and 25-19 improving to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the OAC. The Comets fall to 9-12 on the season and 1-3 in the OAC.
Marietta got off to a slow start allowing Capital to build a 12-6 lead in the first set. The Comets held on to the lead well into the set. Trailing 20-16, the Pioneers got a pair of kills from
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) and benefited from two Capital errors to even the score 20-20.
A service ace from Samaree Perkins gave Capital a 26-25 lead and had the Comets one point away from the first set win. However, an attack error by the Comets evened the set, 26-26, and then two
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) kills gave the Pioneers the 28-26 win.
Marietta jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set and never trailed. The Pioneers maintained a three-to-five-point lead until earning five straight points to put the set out of reach, 23-14. A kill from Fellers and a Capital error finished off the set, 25-16.
The third set was back and forth through the early points. Marietta gradually built a four-point lead and then put the match away with a 4-0 run for a 20-12 lead. An ace from
Sophie Evans (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and kills from
Emory Spitler (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) and Fellers spurred the run.
Fellers led the Pioneer attack with 14 kills. She added five kills, four digs, and one service ace. Silva added 11 kills and three blocks.
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) finished with seven kills, six blocks, and seven digs.
Spitler piloted the offense recording 32 assists to go along with three kills, seven digs, and an ace.
Keira Shannon (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) and
Kamryn Haynes (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) each had 12 digs.
Larissa Smith and Chloe Preocanin had seven kills each to lead Capital. Perkins added five kills and three blocks. Bryn Whitmer and Kenadee Winters finished with 16 and 11 assists, respectively. Abby Brunner had 20 digs for the Comets.
Marietta hosts Wittenberg University on Friday (Oct. 18) at 7:00 p.m.
