TIFFIN, Ohio — Marietta College defeated Heidelberg University by the score of 2-0 Saturday (Oct. 12) in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 4-7-1 on the season and 1-2 in the OAC. Heidelberg falls to 0-10-1 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.
"Today was not the best offensive performance we ever had, but after having dropped three in a row, we will take it," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We get to come back to Marietta with three points in the bag. We will take it and get ready for a good Capital team on Wednesday."
The Pioneers dominated possession in the match controlling the ball for nearly 65% of the match. But Marietta couldn't capitalize on its opportunities in front of the goal.
A pair of unassisted first half goals were the difference in the game.
Eli Swirsky (Solon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) tallied the game winner in the 13th minute.
Christopher Rodriguez (Northridge, Calif./Daniel Pearl Magnet) doubled the Pioneer lead with a goal in the 33rd minute.
Joey Backhaus (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) recorded the clean sheet in goal for Marietta. He posted three saves as the Pioneer defense severely limited Heidelberg's scoring chances.
Connor Heramb (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South),
Sam Holthaus (Columbus, Ohio/University), and
Lee Miller (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) patrolled the back line for the Navy Blue and White. Ryan Miller had nine saves in goal for the Student Princes.
Marietta Outshot the Student Princes 20-6, including an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Pioneers were awarded seven corners to just one for Heidelberg.
Marietta hosts Capital University on Wednesday (Oct. 16) at 7:00 p.m.
