MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team came back after giving up a first half goal to defeat Chatham University, 2-1, on Tuesday (Sept. 5) evening. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 2-0 on the season, and with the loss the Cougars are now 0-1-1 overall.
"That team beat us 7-1 last year. What else can anyone say?," said Head Coach
Zack Votra. "This is the most dedicated and driven group of young women I've seen. Everything goes to them."
The Cougars wasted no time as they scored first, just a little over four minutes into the game. Lizzy Martz scored off of a free kick that she sent high into the air toward Marietta goalkeeper
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights). The ball slipped through Legg's hands and it landed softly into the net to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead. The Pioneers actually outshot Chatham, 6-3, in the first half, but only sent one shot on goal and took that 1-0 deficit into intermission
Marietta turned up the aggression in the second half as they sent 17 shots in the final 45 minutes with two ending up in the back of the net. Ten minutes in to the half,
Kaylie Ward (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) sent a shot into the box that was blocked by Chatham's goalkeeper Hannah Ehrlich.
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) took the carom and pushed the ball into the lower right of the net, tying the game at one. Three minutes later,
Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) scored the go-ahead goal off of a Kontul assist. The Cougars could not answer and Marietta won the game 2-1.
Marietta outshot the Cougars, 25-9, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-5.
Legg played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced 6 shots on goal, and made 5 saves in the match.
The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (Sept. 9) when they travel to Mt. St. Joseph with a 6 p.m. start time.
