WASHINGTON, Pa. — Marietta College and Washington & Jefferson College battled to a scoreless draw Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon in men's soccer action. The Pioneers move to 1-0-1 overall, while the Presidents are 0-0-1 on the young season.
"A tale of two halves. First half we were all over them. The second half was the opposite," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "I felt we had the game where we wanted in the first half but gave up that control by not doing the little things that we had been doing. It's disappointing because I thought we were going to get it done. Credit to them for taking some control back in the second half."
The Pioneers dominated the possession in the first half earning three corners and taking 10 shots. Washington & Jefferson goalkeeper Charles Boldosser turned away three shots to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
Washington & Jefferson was more aggressive in the second half and managed three corners and six shots.
"You're never are good or as bad as you think you are after the first weekend," Bergin said. "We experienced a little of both this weekend. There is lots of work ahead of us."
Luke Price (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers and recorded a pair of saves while notching his first clean sheet of the season. Boldosser finished with eight saves in goal for the Presidents.
For the match, Marietta took 17 shots to just eight for the Presidents. The Pioneers had an 8-2 edge in shots in goal, while Washington & Jefferson had a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Pioneers' defense has not allowed a goal this season in 180 minutes of playing time. In addition to Price's clean sheet today, Joe Backhaus recorded the shutout in Marietta's season-opening win over Chatham.
Marietta returns home to host Denison University on Wednesday (Sept. 6) at 7:00 p.m.
