MARIETTA, Ohio — Case Western Reserve University scored nine runs in the first three innings and never looked back as the Spartans defeated the University of Mary Washington, 16-2, Friday (May 19) afternoon at in the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Tournament being played at Marietta College's Pioneer Park.
Case Western improves to 28-13 overall and will play Marietta, a 11-10 winner over Adrian on Friday, in the winner's bracket at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday (May 20). Mary Washington falls to 28-15 on the season and will play Adrian in the loser's bracket at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
Case Western Reserve scored three runs in each of the first three innings for a 9-0 lead. Zack Carinci smacked a three-run home run to left center in the first. Jasiah Harris nailed a three-run bomb to left field in the second inning.
Mary Washington got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Andrew Gerhart reached on a one-out single and moved to second when Jacob Christenbury walked. Gerhart moved to third on a deep fly ball of the bat of Jonathan Sedmak. A ground ball to the second baseman appeared to end the inning, but the ball was misplayed allowing Gerhart to score.
The Eagles' Ty Lowe doubled in the sixth, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2.
Case Western put the game out of reach with seven more runs in the final three innings. The big blow was another three-run home run. This time from Matt Trout.
Reece Marley (7-3) started on the mound for CWRU and got the win. He threw 6.0 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. Marley walked four and struck out one. Matthew DuBois worked the final 3.0 innings for his first save of the season. DuBois allowed two hits, walked one and struck out four.
Jackson Myers (4-6) started and took the loss for Mary Washington. He allowed eight runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Myers walked four and struck out four. Jamie Kotula allowed two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of middle relief. Ryan Dudak and Jackson Beale each worked one inning.
Carinci and Jack Anderson each had three hits for the Spartans. Carinci and Harris drove in four runs apiece.
Ryan Schwarz went 2-for-3 for Mary Washington.
