Women’s Lacrosse defeats Muskingum in regular season finale; clinches playoff spot

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team defeated Muskingum University, 17-6, on Wednesday (April 26) to close out the 2023 regular season.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 10-6 overall, 4-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. With the loss the Muskies finished the season at 5-11, 0-7 in the OAC.  Also, the Pioneers clinched the #4 seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.

"Great team win! Everyone contributed to a great finale of our regular season," said Head Coach Malory Nadrah.  "Awesome connections on attack, great composure on defense. I am so proud of this team for a phenomenal season. So much credit to the first 4 teams for building a strong foundation for Team 5 to play on this season."

The Fighting Muskies got on the board first when their leading scorer on the season, Riley Hudock, scored in the first minute of the matchup.  The Pioneers would answer with eight tallies of their own to finish off the first period.  Maggie Downard (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson) tied up the contest at the 9:46 mark, off of a Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton) assist.  After Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford) scored on a free position shot moments later, the Pioneers kept up the attack as Dyott scored on the next possession.  Mallory Wiles (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) got in on the act as she scored twice and Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) scored on a free position shot to give the Pioneers a 6-1 lead.  Kayla Godwin (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) would close the period with two scores and the Pioneers took an 8-1 lead into the next period.  Dyott and Godwin would add to their score totals in a relatively quiet second period and Marietta led 10-2 at the half.

The Pioneers kept the offense flowing in the third period, outscoring the Muskies 5-2 in the third.  The Pioneer attack was fueled by two Wiles goals while Renee Mulvaney (Midland, Mich./Midland) and Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) added their names to the score sheet with a goal apiece.  Muskingum was able to score twice more in the fourth period but could get no closer and the Pioneers would cruise to a 17-6 OAC victory, closing out the season in impressive fashion.

Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) played all 60 minutes in the net for the Pioneers.  May faced 30 shots, 22 of which were on goal and made 16 saves.

Marietta was led by Wiles as she scored four goals.  Godwin and Dyott both scored on three occasions.  Roeder scored twice in the matchup.  Lindy Brobeck (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) scored a goal and assisted on another.  Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) caused two turnovers and picked up six groundballs.

The Pioneers will host a first-round OAC tournament game this Saturday (April 29) as they welcome in Otterbein University.  The Cardinals secured the #5 seed as they held on to defeat Ohio Northern University 12-11 on Wednesday.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
