Softball splits at Penn State Behrend

ERIE, Pennsylvania — The Marietta College softball team split a nonconference doubleheader at Penn State Behrend Sunday (April 23) afternoon. The Lions won game one, 5-2, and the Pioneers took game two, 11-1 in five innings.

Marietta moves to 21-11 on the season, while Penn State is now 15-15 overall.

The Lions scored three runs in the first two inning of game one for the early lead and then kept the Pioneer offense in check for the victory.

The McNany sisters drove in four of Penn State's five runs. Cami McNany plated the first run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. Jocelyn McNany knocked in two with a single up the middle in the second inning.  Cami then knocked in another un in the fifth.

Marietta got on the board in the second inning. Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) led off with a single and was sacrificed into scoring position by Haylee Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger). Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) lined a single to right-center scoring Middleton.

The Pioneers' final run came on a pair of doubles in the fourth inning. Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) double to right-center and then scored on a double from Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville).

Kazmirski (1-5) started and took the loss. She gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits in 1.1 innings. Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) was charged with two runs on two hits in 2.2 innings and Middelton worked the final 2.0 inning giving up no runs on one hit.

Abby Tingley (6-5) went the distance in the circle for Penn State. Tingley gave up two runs on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

In game two, Marietta grabbed a 5-0 lead and then added six runs in the top of the fifth for the run-rule victory.

Mott drove in the first run with an RBI single and Taylor Watts (Galloway, Ohio/West Jefferson) added a run-scoring double giving Marietta a 2-0 lead in the second inning. A sac fly from Mott and RBI doubles from Brown and Airy in the third inning made it 5-0.

The Pioneers sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth. Middleton led off with a solo home run to centerfield. Middleton had an RBI single in her second at bat of the inning. Kazmirski added a two-run single, while Airy plated one run with a single and Jillian Strecansky (Columbiana, Ohio/South Range) drove in one with a sac fly.

Sarah Keating (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) (2-0) started and got the win. She threw 3.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits. Middleton tossed the final 1.2 innings allowing one hit and striking out three.

Kaitlyn Ezzone (0-3) started and got the loss. She was charged with 10 runs, all earned, on 12 hits in 4.1 innings. Emi Curcio gave up one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Middleton finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Micaela Bradley (Greenup, Ill./Cumberland), Brown, Mott, Airy and Watts each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.

Marietta plays at Heidelberg on Saturday (April 29) at 1:00 p.m.
