GRANVILLE, Ohio — Marietta College swept a nonconference doubleheader at Denison University Thursday (March 30) afternoon running their winning streak to six games. The Pioneers posted scores of 8-4 and 13-7 improving to 9-5 on the season. Denison falls to 7-7 overall.
Marietta scored five runs in the first two innings of game one and then added three insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) had an RBI single scoring
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) with the first run of the game.
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) lined a two-run single to left in the second inning.
Jillian Strecansky (Columbiana, Ohio/South Range) and
Taylor Airy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) each knocked in a run in the late innings.
Kazmirski started the game in the circle for Marietta and worked 2.0 shutout innings giving up one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) (2-1) earned the win allowing one unearned run on one hit. Middleton gave up three runs on six hits in 2.2 innings.
Brooke Surbaugh (3-3) started and took the loss for Denison. Surbaugh threw 5.0 innings and allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits. Sophia Parpala pitched 2.0 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits.
Kazmirski, Middleton, Strecansky,
Shelby Metzger (Beavercreek Township, Ohio/Beavercreek) and
Camryn Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
Kazmirski started off game two with a two-run home run over the leftfield fence. She currently leads the Ohio Athletic Conference with seven home runs and 24 runs batted in.
The Big Red answered with a grand slam in the home half of the first. Denison's first three hitters all singled to load the bases for catcher Annabelle Calderon. Calderon deposited the 1-1 pitch from
Breanna Zirkle (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) over the center field fence for a 4-2 lead.
Middleton replace Zirkle in the circle and retired the next three Denison batters to get out of the inning.
The Big Red lead didn't last long as the Pioneers struck for five runs in the second inning. In addition to scoring two runs on wild pitches, Campbell, Brown, and
Haylee Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) each had an RBI in the rally.
Strecansky delivered an RBI double in the fourth and Metzger followed with a two-run double to left center. Middleton added an RBI double in the seventh and Stecansky plated another run with a sac fly.
Middleton (4-3) picked up the win throwing 6.1 innings of relief. She allowed three runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Timko retired the final two hitters of the game.
Sydney Silverstein (4-3) started and got the loss. She gave up seven runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Parpala and Surbaugh both threw in relief.
Metzger, Kazmirski and Strecansky eavh had three hist for the Pioneers. Middleton and Brown added two hits apiece.
Marietta will host Ohio Northern on Saturday (April 1) in the annual Community Day games. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
