KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Christopher Newport limited Marietta College to just one hit in a 10-0 seven inning, victory Sunday (Feb. 26) afternoon at the D3 Showcase. The Pioneers fall to 2-2 overall, while the Captains improve to 9-1 on the season.
CNU starting pitcher Dylan Weber (3-0) was superb working 6.1 innings of one-hit baseball. He walked two and struck out six. Marietta didn't have a hit in the game until the seventh inning. Daniel Elliott struck out both batters he faced in the seventh inning.
Christopher Newport grabbed the lead with a run in the second. Scott Crosson led off with a double into the left field corner and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Zach Dzarnowski. Justin Bowers doubled the lead with a towering home run to center field in the fourth inning.
Brett Carson (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) (0-1) started on the mound for the Pioneers and threw 4.0 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out three.
Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) took over to start the fifth inning.
Josh Pedersen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson),
Dawson Pierce (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and
Jacob Rocky (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) all threw in relief for the Pioneers.
CNU exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Captains sent 14 batters to the plate and took advantage of three Marietta errors in the inning. None of the eight runs were earned.
Alex Richter (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) broke up the no hitter with a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning. But CNU struck out the next three batters to end the game.
Marietta returns home to host Case Western Reserve on Wednesday (March 1). Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 2:00 p.m.
