MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team lost to John Carroll 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) on Wednesday (Sept. 21) evening inside the Ban Johnson Arena. With the loss the Pioneers are now 9-3 overall and 0-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the victory the Blue Streaks are now 10-3 overall and 1-0 in OAC play.
The first set was close early, as the set remained tied at 11-11.
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) had the hot hand early in the match with five kills. John Carroll was able take a 18-14 lead with the help of some key kills from Cassi Calamunci.
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) delivered a kill to make the score 18-15 but the Pioneers could not get any closer. The Blue Streaks closed the set with two kills and a Pioneer attack error, and took the first frame, 25-18.
The second set was a back and forth battle as the set was tied at 8-8. The Marietta offense was sparked by kills from
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and the Fellers sisters. John Carroll answered with seven of the next nine points to lead 16-11. Marietta battled back with a
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) service ace and a Silva kill to make the score 17-15. John Carroll was able to win eight of the next ten points, including the final four, and won 25-18.
Marietta stormed out in set three with a 5-2 lead as John Carroll started to make some errors. The Blue Streaks righted the ship and rushed back to a 6-6 tie. John Carroll scored three of the next four to take the lead, and then scored four straight points off of kills from their front line to lead 15-8. Kills from Silva and the Fellers sisters kept them in the set but they could get no closer than seven. The Blue Streaks closed out the final set, and won 25-18.
The Pioneer offense was led by
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington), she had 15 kills. Silva played well and registered 11 kills.
Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) led the defensive effort with 18 digs in the match.
Marietta will return to the court Friday (Sept. 23) when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to play in the Carnegie Mellon Quad. They will first play the host Tartans, with the game scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
