GRANVILLE, Ohio — Marietta College dropped a hard-fought match at Denison University by the score of 2-1 Friday (Sept. 16) evening in men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 1-2-3 on the season, while Denison improves to 4-0-2 overall.
"Heck of an effort from the boys tonight. I'm gutted that we didn't get something out of the game," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "Denison is a good team that is well coached, and they found a way. For a variety of reasons, we struggled in keeping possession in the second half which allowed them to keep coming in waves. Eventually they found a way. I'm proud of the team. We need to get past it quickly as we are back at it tomorrow."
The Pioneers jumped on top in the 15th minute. Jovanni Auddino's shot was deflected right to
Gavin Long (Surrey, United Kingdom/John Fisher School) who one-timed it into the lower left corner of the next from 15 yards out for the first goal of the match.
Denison leveled the match 10 minutes later. Jake Krueger crossed the ball from the left side of the 6-yard box on the end line to the top right corner of the box where an unmarked Ethan Miracle deposited the ball into the net for the goal.
The Big Red scored the game winner in the 78th minute. Denison won the ball out of the air off a Pioneer goal kick and quickly went on the attacked.
Krueger played a through ball to Miracle who took a couple of touches and then fired a shot from just inside the top of the 18-yard box into the lower right corner of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Tommy Prokos went the distance in goal for the Big Red posting two saves.
Luke Price (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) recorded six saves for the Pioneers in 90 minutes of action.
Marietta plays at Earlham College on Saturday (Sept. 17) at 3:30 p.m.
