MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Dwayne Sumler carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the University of Mount Union, seeded fourth, eliminated No. 2 seed Otterbein University by the score of 14-4 Friday (May 13) afternoon in the 2022 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.

Mount Union improves to 23-18 on the season and will face No. 3 seed Baldwin Wallace University in the final game of the day. The winner will need to beat top-seeded Marietta College twice on Saturday to claim the Championship trophy and the OAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

"Sumler was really, really good. He didn't give up a hit till the seventh inning, while both games our starters couldn't get out of the second inning and that's not a recipe for success," Otterbein head coach George Powell said. "I think we've overcome a lot this year. We overachieved and it felt good just to get back to this tournament."

The Purple Raiders jumped on Otterbein starter Nicky Zorne for two runs in the first inning and then chased him from the game with five more in the second. Coleman Stauffer delivered a two-out, two-run single up the middle to get Mount Union on the board.

Zack Mazza smacked a three-run home run in the top of the second. An error and a wild pitch resulted in two additional runs for the Purple Raiders.

Zorne (5-2) pitched 1.2 innings and was charged with seven runs, six earned, on nine hits. Logan Weber threw two innings and Travis Burson worked the last 5.1 innings.

Sumler (5-2) picked up the win throwing 7.2 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out eight. Ryan Osman threw the final 1.1 innings giving up one run on three hits.

Otterbein broke up the no-hitter with four straight hits in the seventh inning. The Cardinals got an RBI double from Jamie Perebzak and RBI singles from Zach Franz and Noah Sprowls. Sam Edgell closed out the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Walker Marlowe led the Mount Union offense with five hits, a double and five runs scored. Eric Schilling and Trey Weaver had three hits each, while Thomas Gallant, Jaired Lehman and Andrew Witte had two hits apiece.

Luke Barber had two hits for the Cardinals.
