ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's lacrosse team battled back from an early deficit but couldn't hold off Ohio Northern University as the Pioneers lost, 10-9, Saturday (April 9) evening. Marietta falls to 6-6 overall and 0-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio Northern is 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.
"We had several players make big plays for us. Carlee (Kernodle) finished some big plays on attack and Marley (Phillippe) came up big in transition for us," Marietta head coach
Malory Nadrah said. "Taylor (Carr) held her mark and there were a couple other great moments that kept us in it tonight until the end."
Ohio Northern scored in the opening minute of the game when Elizabeth Graham found the back of the net with an assist from Sydney Kilgore. The Pioneers answered with a goal from
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) off an assist from Shelby Milheim.
The Polar Bears built a 5-1 lead with four straight goals. Avary Snyder scored twice, while Meredith Miller and Kilgore notched goals as well.
Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton) snapped the ONU scoring streak when she notched a goal off a free position opportunity and closed the first quarter with the Polar Bears leading 5-2.
After an Ohio Northern goal to open the second quarter, the Pioneers recorded three straight goals to get within one, 6-5, at halftime.
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) scored on a free position chance and added an unassisted goal.
Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) closed the first half scoring.
Kernodle struck again to open the third quarter. Adams picked up the assist on the game-tying goal.
Once again, the Polar Bears reclaimed the lead when Emma Perry scored her second goal of the day. The lead was short-lived as Marietta scored two in a row for its first lead of the game.
Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and McGriff each scored unassisted goals to make it 8-7 in favor of MC.
Perry scored on a free position chance with 11:31 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game, 8-8. Neither team could find the back of the net for over seven minutes when Adams scored with 4:07 left in the game to put the Pioneers back on top.
Ohio Northern leveled the game on a goal from Miller, her second of the day, at the 2:52 mark. The Polar Bears got the game winner from Graham with 1:18 left on the clock.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) started in goal for the Pioneers and gave up six goals and made five saves in 30 minutes.
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) also played 30 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and allowed four goals and stopped two shots.
Chloe Millican went the distance in goals for the Polar Bears making nine saves and giving up nine goals.
Marietta hosts Otterbein University on Wednesday (April 20) at 6 p.m.
