OBERLIN, Ohio —
Brett Carson (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) slugged three home runs leading No. 1 ranked Marietta College to an 11-1 win over Oberlin College Thursday (April 28) afternoon in a nonconference matchup. The Pioneers, winners of 18 straight games, improve to 32-3 overall. Oberlin falls to 7-22 on the season.
Carson became the second Pioneer this season, and eleventh in program history, to hit three home runs in one game tying the school record.
Damian Yenzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) did it earlier this season against Heidelberg.
All three of Carson's home runs were to the opposite field. He hit a solo shot in the second and fourth innings and then launched a three-run blast in the fifth inning.
Marietta jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Turner Hill (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) led off with a double and moved to third on a single from Yenzi.
Zach Boyd (Kent, Ohio/Tallmadge) grounded into a double play that allowed Hill to score.
Hill got the six-run fifth inning rolling with a two-run double into the left-center gap. The Pioneers added a run when Hill stole third and scored when the throw was errant at third base. Carson's third homer made it 9-0.
Gino Sabatine (Alliance, Ohio/West Branch) (5-1) started on the mound for Marietta and threw six shutout innings. He allowed four hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Zach Marzetz (Blacklick, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln),
Kail Hill (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Nick Kumor (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) each worked one inning. Marzetz allowed one run on a solo home run.
Andrew Shen (0-1) started and took the loss. Shen gave up nine runs on nine hits with four walks and one strikeout. Four other Yeomen pitched for Oberlin.
Carson finished 4-for-4 with three home runs, three runs scored, five RBI and a walk. Hill was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Yenzi had two hits, including a double, his 22nd of the season, one shy of tying the school single season record.
Marietta travels to No. 12 ranked Baldwin Wallace on Saturday (April 30) for a huge Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
