TIFFIN, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team earned a conference victory in a 14-5 win over Heidelberg University on Saturday (April 24) afternoon. With the win the Pioneers improve to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the loss the Student Princes fall to 1-14 overall and 1-7 in the OAC.
Marietta opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game, when
Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored off a feed from
Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). A minute and a half later the Pioneers made the score 2-0 when
Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) found the back of the net unassisted.
Eren Evensen (Medina, Ohio/Medina) scored the next two goals in the next six minutes
and the Pioneers entered the second quarter ahead, 4-0.
Marietta continued to pull away in the second quarter, as they scored the next three goals. Neal and Franklin added to their goal totals and
Kyle Fleshman (Davidsonville, Md./South River) got into the act, scoring off of a pass from
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) at the 6:08 mark. Heidelberg stopped the momentum briefly when David Weaver scored a minute later. Ficke and
Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) scored late second period goals and the Pioneers had a 9-1 lead at the intermission.
After a scoreless third period, both teams had a flurry of goals in the final period.
Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) scored unassisted just a minute and a half into the period. Ficke score off of a
Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale) feed a minute later.
Zach Klein (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) scored unassisted at the 11:04 mark. After the Student Princes scored to make the tally 12-2, Rundgren and
Logan Podgorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) punched in two more goals to give the Pioneers their biggest lead in the game. Heidelberg scored the final three goals of the match but the Pioneers would cruise to a 14-5 conference victory.
Ben Millard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) played all 60 minutes in goal. He faced 33 shots, 20 of which were on goal, and made 17 saves.
Ficke, Evensen, Neal, and Rundgren all tallied two goals apiece. Ficke and Franklin assisted on two goals apiece.
Nathan Grover (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was 14-17 in the faceoff and picked up a team high nine groundballs. Defensively, Evensen had a solid game with three caused turnovers.
Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (April 27) when they conclude the regular season with a home match against Muskingum, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
