Softball drops two at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union took two games from Marietta College Wednesday (April 20) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference softball action. The Purple Raiders won the first game, 13-1, in five innings and then took game two, 11-6.
 
Marietta falls to 11-19 overall and 5-9 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 17-16-1 on the season and 7-6-1 in conference games.
 
The Purple Raiders took advantage of two Marietta errors in the bottom of the first inning of game one to score six runs. Mount Union added seven more in the fourth inning for the run-rule victory.
 
Marietta's lone run came in the top of the first inning. Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) reached on a one-out double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) singles through the left side of the infield plating Kazmirski.
 
Alyssa Rose (8-2) started in the circle for Mount Union and got the win. She pitched four innings and allowed one run on three hits. Rose walked two and struck out seven. Cheyanne Bosse retired Marietta in order in the fifth.
 
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) (9-7) started and took the loss for the Pioneers. She was charged with six runs on two hits with four walks. Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) and Emily Callam (Greenville, Ind./Corydon Central) each threw in relief. Helmke gave up seven runs on six hits.
 
Kazmirski, Brown and Anna Swierczewski (Natrona Heights, Pa./Saint Joseph) had Marietta's hits in the game.
 
The second game started with three scoreless innings before the Purple Raiders managed to push three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Marietta answered with four runs in the top of the fifth.
 
Kazmirski led off the fifth with a solo home run to left. Brown walked and was lifted for pinch runner Liv Lauvray (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg). A double from Emma Burke (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) gave MC runners at second and third. Makayla Cordle (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) ran for Burke at second base.
 
Swierczewski singled down the left field line scoring Lauvray and moving Cordle to third. Breanna Zirkle (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) ran for Swierczewski. Following a line drive out off the bat of Hailey Maher (Galloway, Ohio/Central Crossing), Micaela Bradley (Greenup, Ill./Cumberland) doubled to the wall in left center scoring Cordle and Zirkle.
 
The Pioneer lead was short-lived as Mount Union plated five runs in the home half of the fifth and then added three more in the sixth.
 
Marietta scored an unearned in the sixth and scored one in the seventh on a sac fly from Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier).
 
Sarah Keating (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) (0-2) started in the circle for Marietta and took the loss. She was charged with five runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Four other pitchers toed the rubber for Marietta.
 
Bosse started for the Purple Raiders and threw two shutout innings. Peyton Morrison (5-3) got the win tossing two innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Rose worked the final three innings giving up three runs on six hits.
 
Daugherty, Kazmirski, Burke and Maher each had two hits for Marietta.
 
Marietta returns home to host John Carroll this Saturday (April 23) for Community Day. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
